A tax residency certificate, also called a tax domicile certificate, is an official Ministry of Finance document confirming that a person or company is a UAE tax resident. It supports claims under the UAE's double tax treaties.
What it is
Both names mean the same document. It proves your UAE tax residency to foreign tax authorities, banks and financial institutions, and it gives access to treaty benefits. The UAE has a large network of double taxation agreements, reported at more than 130.
Benefits
- It prevents the same income from being taxed in two countries.
- It proves your tax residency to foreign authorities, banks and institutions.
- It gives access to treaty benefits.
Eligibility
- Individuals: generally about 183 days of presence in a 12-month period. Some may qualify with a shorter stay if they also hold permanent residence or UAE employment.
- Companies: mainland, free zone or internationally managed businesses that have operated in the UAE for at least one year before applying.
Requirements
Individuals: a valid residence visa and Emirates ID, the minimum physical presence, proof of residence and proof of UAE income or employment. An entry and exit report may be requested.
Companies: a valid trade licence, one year of operations, a physical UAE office, a company bank account, and management and control based in the UAE.
Documents
- Individuals: passport, Emirates ID, residence visa, tenancy contract or utility bill, six months of UAE bank statements, a salary certificate or employment contract and the entry and exit report.
- Companies: trade licence, memorandum of association, shareholders' passport copies, company bank statements, office lease and the organisational structure.
The application
Register on the official government portal, choose the tax residency certificate service, enter accurate details, upload the documents and pay the fee online. The authority reviews the submission, and approved certificates can be downloaded through the system.
Fees
Reported government fees include an application submission fee of AED 50, with a further fee on approval that depends on whether the applicant is tax-registered and whether it is an individual or a company. The fee for a printed copy is extra. Consultant fees are additional, and government fees change, so check the portal before applying.
Processing time
Initial approval takes about 4 to 5 working days, and issuance about 5 to 7 working days after approval. Applications that need extra verification can take two to three weeks.
Common reasons for rejection
- Not enough physical presence
