In the UAE, brand registration is trademark registration through the Ministry of Economy. A registered trademark can cover a business name, logo, slogan, product name, symbol or a combination of these.
What brand registration means
Legally it is a trademark registration. It gives the owner exclusive rights to use the brand within the UAE.
Why register
- Legal ownership of the brand
- Protection against imitation
- The right to act against infringement
- Greater credibility with customers
- A valuable intangible asset
Without registration, someone else may register your name first, even if you used it earlier.
The process, step by step
1. Trademark search. Check the Ministry's database for identical or similar marks, to reduce the risk of rejection. 2. Choose the class. The Nice Classification has 45 classes. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and 35 to 45 cover services. Accounting and auditing, for instance, fall under Class 35. 3. Prepare the documents: a high-resolution logo or wordmark, a trade licence copy, the owner's passport copy, Emirates ID if applicable and a power of attorney if an agent files. Foreign companies may need legalised documents. 4. Submit online through the Ministry portal with the applicant details, the mark, the class and a description of the goods or services, and pay the official filing fee. 5. Examination. The authority checks for conflicts with existing marks, legal violations and naming compliance. 6. Publication. The mark is published and an objection period of about 30 days follows. 7. Registration. If there are no objections, pay the final fees and receive the certificate. A UAE trademark lasts 10 years and can be renewed.
How long it takes
Typically around four to six months if there are no objections. Objections or disputes extend the timeline.
What it costs
Fees cover the filing, publication and registration, and run to several thousand dirhams in official fees per class, with professional fees on top. Confirm the current fee schedule before you apply.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the trademark search
- Choosing the wrong class
- Using a name too close to an existing brand
- Missing the renewal deadline
- Registering only in the UAE while operating across the region
Beyond the UAE
Options include GCC trademark registration and international registration under the Madrid system, which offer protection beyond the UAE.
Why professional help matters
An adviser helps with classification, documents and compliance, which means accurate filings, the right classes, a lower risk of rejection, timely follow-up and fuller protection.
